I’m sure that everyone at some point wondered what to do when you feel lost.
I found myself feeling this way as a teenager. I always felt as if something was missing in my life, something really important. Something that I needed on a deep level.
I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but I was trying to find what was missing by chasing all the wrong things. I partied, I drank, I slept around; but I knew that all those things were not the answer. At best, they were intoxicating distractions.
It wasn’t until I started reading books, and spending a lot of time alone with my thoughts that I started to step out of the confusion.
Learning To Think Again
If you grew up in regular home, went to a regular public school and lived the regular life, chances are that you were not encouraged to think things out for yourself. How many times did your teachers ask you to, “figure it out?”
They don’t. They teach you to follow directions, memorize facts, and then regurgitate what you memorized. None of it really requires you to actually think.
This is a great system for future factory workers, or if you want to work in an office cubicle. These careers might be fulfilling for some, but I’m sure you can agree with me when I say that they aren’t for everyone.
Unfortunately, schools and even family units have ingrained this type of mindset into us. The “follow directions and do what you’re told” mindset. That’s not how life works though, life is not an instruction manual.
Everyone has their own unique path that they have to create for themselves, and this requires thinking. Life is just one big calling for you to “figure it out.”
Eventually, with the help of learning and reflecting, I realized what I was missing. I realized that I didn’t have any real purpose in my life. I didn’t truly care about anything, and I felt disconnected from the world because of this.
Get To Know Yourself
Creating a purpose for your life is a process, and it is something that naturally evolves over time. The first step towards finding direction in your life is to get to know yourself.
You’ll have to spend a lot of time alone, and that is just what you need. Learning to like your own company has the potential to change absolutely everything.
Understanding who you are on a deep level is the foundation for a fulfilling life. For ideas on getting to know yourself, here are some related articles:
Discover Your Passions and Purpose
After you have thoroughly explored your own character, you will inevitably have some idea about what you are passionate about. Your passion is the gateway to your purpose.

In other words, what is done with your heart is what will make a difference. Do not dedicate yourself to a purpose that you do not actually care about. Do not commit to something that does not stir your heart, and evoke real emotion of you.
Find that thing that will make you fall in love, and chase it. Once you are chasing it, you will never feel that sense of confusion again, and you will never feel lost.
