Why strive for excellence? Why indeed. This is a pivotal question to ask, and the fact that you’re asking it is a good sign. It means that your curiosity is still in tact and you have not lost your will to wonder.
Excellence Is The New Scarcity
That’s right, human ability is the new sought after commodity. How far a company can progress, particularly the successful and established companies is primarily limited by how many highly skilled employees they have.
“For roughly five hundred years the scarce resource in business was financial capital. If you had it, you had the means to create more wealth, and if you didn’t, you didn’t. That world is now gone. Today, in a change that is historically quite sudden, financial capital is abundant. The scarce resource is no longer money. It’s human ability.” – Geoff Colvin
Your excellence is an asset.
If you are truly excellent at something, it will not only make you indispensable and irreplaceable, it will impart value on the world. Your abilities, if they have been mastered have the potential to change the world.
All worthwhile innovation and groundbreaking creative endeavours have always been coupled with mastery. You must be the best if you desire to make an authentic contribution to society.
Everyone Can Be Excellent
Being talented is a matter of deliberate practice and hard work. Every single individual who ever climbed to the heights of excellence did not take short-cuts. They all dedicated their energy, their time, and their hearts to their chosen fields.
Genetic talent is a myth, your IQ is not correlated with how well you can excel at something, and you are not born with a certain talent profile. You cultivate it throughout your life, it is purely a measure of your dedication.
That’s good news, because it means that you are in control of the quality of your abilities. It is all up to you.

Go All The Way
When you strive for excellence, you give life an edge. You give it zeal, and you have a burning reason to wake up everyday. There is nothing quite like seeing your dream just beyond your grasp.
Tasting it, smelling it, living it in your mind. Knowing that one day, it will manifest.
Sometimes when you are working towards something and you see yourself making progress, you become afraid. You realize that this is the point of no return, and you are teetering on the edge of your new self.
This is where a lot of people stop. They have built their skills up enough to get by in life, and they are comfortable. They plateau, they shy away from their greatness. Do not stop here.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. – Marianne Williamson
Beyond this threshold is where the real treasure lies, and I believe that all of the greatest individuals had to courage to take the plunge despite their fears, despite their doubts, despite the unknown.
Take a look at this video that bring to life the words of Charles Bukowski. He knows the depths of what it takes to be great, and they are not surrounded by fear, but paradise.
