In this article I will give you 8 powerful reasons why it is important to know yourself. Usually, life pushes you outwards. Everything you are taught that is important usually consists of interacting with the outside world.
The subject of self-awareness is rarely, if ever brought to your attention during childhood. I don’t ever recall discussing the significance of getting to know myself with my parents. It just wasn’t a subject our family conversed about.
In most cases we are shown at a young age that interacting with the outside world is paramount. Well, it is paramount–but that isn’t the whole picture. It’s just as important to focus on the inside. That is where your perception of the outside world comes from.
So start at home, with yourself.
1. You Will Discover Your Strengths and Weaknesses
When you begin the process of getting to know yourself, you naturally become aware of what you are good and not-so-good at.You will automatically build a “map” of your talents and your limitations.
This is one of the most crucial aspects of yourself that you need to become aware of. Your awareness of this, will actually set the stage for how your life will turn out.
If you cannot clearly recognize (not just have a general idea) what your strengths and weaknesses are, you will not be able to progress in life.
2. You Will Be Aware of What You Value
A lot of the time, people are not fully conscious of what they actually value. This is a very precarious approach to life, because if you don’t know what you value, you won’t know what brings you true happiness.
Your values, and whether or not you meet them are strongly linked with your feelings of contentment. When you have a well founded and clear conception of what you value you can then consciously build a life for yourself that will fulfill them.
3. Your Life Will Have Direction
Once you have a solid idea of your talents, limitations and values, you can take these insights and plan your future.
Obviously, you are not going to pursue something in your life that you a) do not value and b) suck at. You are going to go after what you feel has the most potential for you.
When you know you are good at something, you will want to put effort into becoming better at it, and this is exactly what will lead you to a promising future.
4. You Will Gain Confidence
When you discover that you have strengths, you realize you have the potential to change your life–and perhaps the lives of other people. You will feel empowered. It’s an amazing feeling, to feel competent. This realization will boost your self-confidence and make you feel good about who you are.
You will feel special, and worthy.
Self-esteem and a positive self-image is a crucial, fundamental factor that will directly determine the level of someone’s success. Don’t ever forget your worth.
Absolutely everyone is blessed with a gift and a natural brilliance towards something, you just have to search out what it is inside of yourself.
5. You Will Overcome Your Limitations
The first step to deal with any problem or setback, is to be aware of it! The mark of any strong individual is the awareness of their limitations, and their willingness to seek help for them. This is humility, all wise men and women demonstrate humility. It is o.k. and natural to be “bad” at something.
This is part of being human, and just know, that nobody exists or has ever existed that was skilled at absolutely everything.
The beauty of your character also includes your flaws. Exhibiting humility is the tried-and-true method for overcoming any limitation you may have, and you cannot achieve this if you do not know yourself.
6. You Will Gain A Sense of Control
Gaining confidence on account of discovering your strengths also leads to having a sense of control over your life. Whether or not you want to pursue your strengths, is entirely up to you. The world cannot stop you from cultivating what is already there within you.
You are not a victim of life, you are the master of it, and your life is a direct refection of your thoughts and actions. Once you come to this realization you have released yourself from one of the most pervasive fears in the world, the fear that you cannot control your fate.
7. You Will Enrich Your Emotional Intelligence
A primary element of emotional intelligence is your ability to view yourself objectively. You must have the ability to separate yourself from your emotions and your ego so that you can operate from a place of clarity.
The saying “emotions can cloud your judgement” rings true, often your emotions will skew your perspective of situations and you end up making the wrong choice. We’ve all been there.
Understanding your emotional responses and behaviour will give you the power to channel them appropriately. We have so much power and energy within us. Learning how to properly allocate this energy to benefit rather than hinder us is critical.
8. You Will Have a Better Understanding Of Others
Another aspect of understanding oneself is the ability to recognize your motives for why you make certain choices. Once you become skilled at figuring out what your motives are, you can apply the same principles to other people. This is a powerful skill.
You can use it to predicate people’s responses, behaviours and even what they might be thinking.
You will also learn throughout your journey of self-discovery that the way you perceive others is also the way that you perceive yourself. If you have built up a positive self-image of yourself, you automatically transfer that thought process over to your perspectives of other people.
You will naturally look for the good in others. You will like other people more! This will enrich your social life and evoke feelings of love and connection.
So there you have it, 8 compelling reasons to start getting to know yourself. You are worth getting to know, you are special.
This is something you have to discover for yourself and believe! I wish you well on your journey of self-discovery.
